A question often asked is:

What kit should I wear for training and competition?

There is no one definitive answer, especially for training purposes, however a general rule would be to ensure you have comfortable clothing and training shoes for running in. The following is a useful guide:

  • Footware for training purposes should include a good pair of running shoes or trainers, if you have them bring a pair of spiked track shoes although these are not essential.
  • Clothing should be comfortable for exercise, a pair of shorts or running leggings/pants, layered tops (base layer, training top, warm outer top)
  • Always bring a waterproof top in the event of rain, training does not stop because of a little water.
  • It is advisable to always bring a change of clothing in the event of your training gear becoming soaked.

In addition to the above for competition you should make sure you have the following:

  • A club running vest, available from one of your coaches.
  • The correct spikes for the type of track you are running on, at some competitions your shoes will be checked by officials and you may be stopped from running if you have the incorrect spikes in your shoes (a safe guide is to always use pyramid spikes)
  • Safety pins will be required to secure your number to your vest, some venues will supply these but not all.
  • Tape to mark out run-ups, especially if you are competing in long jump and high jump.

Always make sure you take plenty of food and water, competitions will generally last the whole day and you need to keep your energy levels up and stay hydrated.
